How to choose a garage door
Match the architecture
Carriage doors suit farmhouse, craftsman and lake-home styles. Classic raised panel works on traditional homes. Shaker and flush doors give a clean, modern line, and full-view aluminum and glass doors make a statement on contemporary homes and shops.
Pick color, windows and hardware together
A window row lets light into the garage and breaks up a large door. Decorative hinges and handles finish a carriage look. Our garage door visualizer lets you try all three on your own house before you decide.
Think about insulation
If you work in the garage, park in it through the summer or have a room above it, an insulated door helps with temperature and noise. ProDoor offers both non-insulated and insulated options. Insulation is rated by R-value: the higher the number, the better the door resists heat moving through it. An insulated door is also stiffer and quieter, which you notice every time it opens.
Get the size right
Single doors are usually 8 or 9 feet wide; double doors are 16 feet. Standard height is 7 feet, with 8-foot doors for taller trucks and lifted vehicles. If you are thinking about a bigger door, we check the headroom, side room and the header before you order, because changing the opening is a framing job, not just a door swap.
Signs it's time to replace your door
A garage door moves more than any other door on the house, and most of what goes wrong is slow. If you see two or more of these, it's worth a free look:
- The door shakes, sticks or stops partway, or you can see daylight at the sides or bottom.
- Panels are cracked, rusted, dented or delaminating, especially along the bottom where water sits.
- It's loud enough to hear from inside the house, even after the rollers have been lubricated.
- The springs or cables have been replaced more than once, or the opener strains to lift it.
- It's the original door on a home from the 1990s or earlier, with no insulation and a dated look.
Sometimes a repair is the right answer. We tell you plainly at the estimate whether a repair or a replacement makes more sense for the money.
Openers: belt, chain or wall-mount
A new door is the best time to update the opener. Belt-drive openers are the quiet choice, which matters when a bedroom sits above the garage. Chain-drive openers are the durable budget option for detached garages. Wall-mount (jackshaft) openers mount beside the door instead of on the ceiling, which frees the ceiling for overhead storage and suits high-lift tracks. Most new openers add smartphone control, battery backup for power outages and a safety sensor that reverses the door if something is in the way.
How a door replacement works
- Measure and plan: we measure the opening, headroom and side room, and help you choose style, color, windows, hardware and opener.
- Order: your door is ordered to size in the options you picked.
- Install: we remove the old door and install the new door, tracks and springs, then set up the opener.
- Walkthrough: we test the door with you and go over everyday care.
Keeping your new door quiet for years
- Lubricate the rollers, hinges and springs with a garage-door lubricant twice a year. Skip WD-40, which cleans rather than lubricates.
- Wash the door with mild soap and water when you wash the car, and rinse road salt off the bottom panel in winter.
- Test the safety reverse monthly: lay a 2x4 flat under the door and close it. The door should reverse when it touches the board.
- Leave springs and cables to a professional. They are under high tension.
Finish the whole garage
A new door is a great time to update everything behind it. We also install polyaspartic garage floors and garage storage, so the floor, walls and door can be planned together. If the floor is on the list, we coat it first while the garage is empty, then hang the door and install storage. One schedule, one crew, one cleanup.
